SUSYMOR BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES

SUSYMOR Jewelry Designs is the cooperative venture of three (3) jewelry designers and craftsmen, namely Walter Suarez, Rafael Morejon and Sylvia Wolfson:

Walter Suarez
Apprenticed as a child in his father's jewelry shop in Havana, Cuba, Walter developed those skills that would lead to his becoming a master craftsman and designer. In 1964, at the age of 21, he and 2 others left Cuba in a 15 foot boat using a lawn mower engine. They came ashore on a deserted beach on the island of Marathon in the Florida Keys. After crossing a mangrove swamp, they came to a road where a passing motorist assisted them in contacting immigration authorities. Today with over 35 years of experience in his chosen profession, Walter is a true talent in the industry.

Rafael Morejon
In 1962, at the age of 11, Ralph was sent to the U.S., as part of the "Pedro Pan" exodus, from Cuba, by his parents who feared that the Cuban government would take away their young son. After a 3 month stay in a refugee camp, along with 1700 other children, Ralph was placed in a foster home where he lived for several years before being reunited with his parents. At age 14, he began an apprenticeship at a jewelry firm, developing unique skills as a master designer and engineer of intricate mechanisms for fine jewelry, over the course of over 30 years.

Sylvia Wolfson
For many years, Sylvia, a long time Miami resident, designed jewelry, which Walter and Rafael executed, for her private clientele. She began her world travels, living part of each year in Honduras, Guatemala and South Africa. In 1974, while living in Honduras, she set aside her career, temporarily, to run a refugee camp for 7000 victims of a devastating hurricane. She traveled Europe as well. While living in Germany, she developed a close relationship with many fine stonecutters in Idar-Oberstein. Returning to the U.S., rejoining Walter and Rafael, new ideas sprang to mind and SUSYMOR Jewelry Designs was born.
